Bill Compton is a vampire with whom Sookie falls in love, and is a main protagonist in the series. Turned during the Civil War against his will, Bill shows a remarkable and unusual compassion for human life. He is also outwardly expressive of his emotions and holds on to memories of his past human life; behaviors that are unique amongst his vampire peers. Many times, Bill risks his life and standing in vampire society to protect Sookie from the dangers their relationship has brought on. Towards the end of the first season, he kills a vampire in order to save Sookie's life, and is forced by the Vampire authorities to "turn" a teenage girl in order to replenish their ranks.
