Matthew "Matt" Cardle (born in 1983) from Little Maplestead, Essex, is an English singer.  On 12 December 2010, he won the seventh series of the ITV show The X Factor winning a £1m recording contract to Syco Music owned by Sony Music Entertainment, finishing ahead of Rebecca Ferguson.  His cover of popular Biffy Clyro song "Many of Horror", renamed "When We Collide", was released immediately after winning the contest.

Cardle is a former painter and decorator from Little Maplestead, Essex.  Born to parents David and Jennifer Cardle, he was diagnosed with Wilms' tumour, a form of cancer when he was a toddler.  He recovered after one of his kidneys was removed at age 2.
Before applying to The X Factor, he was the frontman and acoustic guitar player of the band Seven Summers, alongside Alex Baker (drums), Jon Holland (bass) and Neillo (guitars).  The band with alternative rock, pop, urban, and folk influences released a self titled debut rock album Seven Summers on 22 January 2010 including hits "Youngblood", "Way to Be" and "Dirt" with the debut single being "Picture of You".  The band performed live on Sue Merchant's BBC radio program on 8 December 2009.  They also won 'Panics Best Band 2010' award.

He auditioned for The X Factor with "You Know I'm No Good".  After Cardle made it through the bootcamp stages, he was sent to Australia were he was put into Dannii Minogue's group.  Minogue mentored Cardle throughout the whole show until he won on December 12, 2010.
