The film begins with Senna's arrival in Formula One in the mid 1980s, and follows Senna's struggles both on track against his rival, French World Champion Alain Prost, and off it, against the internal politics of the sport. In the film, Senna is presented as sublime, spiritual and, on occasion, ruthless: Senna conquers and transcends Formula One to become a global superstar. In the film, Senna is represented to be in private, humble and fiercely patriotic, donating millions to his native Brazil and contemplating a life beyond motor racing, before his death at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. Senna won the World Cinema Audience Award for documentaries at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Senna was a critical success with a 100% fresh critical consensus on Rotten Tomatoes as of June 2011. Dan Jolin of Empire Magazine gave the film 4 stars and stated that it is "ambitiously constructed, deeply compelling, thrilling and in no way only for those who like watching cars drive in circles". Daniel Sarath from the online blog Napier's News gave the film 9 out of 10 and called the film "a flawless work of cinema that showcases documentary filmmaking at its most exciting". Alex Zane from The Sun gave it 4 out of 5 and said that Senna is "fascinating and profoundly moving". Steve Rose from The Guardian, also giving the film a 4 out of 5, praised the fact that "with so much recorded footage of Formula One available, it has been possible to fashion Senna's story as a live action drama rather than a posthumous documentary.
