Wanderlust is a 2012 comedy film directed by David Wain, starring Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd, as a married couple who try to escape modern society by finding themselves on a commune in Georgia, after the economy crashes down on their dreams in New York.
After an urban couple purchases a place in New York, the husband loses his job. With no other options, the couple leaves for Georgia to live with family. Along the way, they stay at a bed and breakfast hotel that turns out to be a hippie commune.
Justin Theroux was announced as part of the cast on June 4, 2010. Fred Armisen was originally cast in the role of nudist Wayne Dunbar, but he has since been replaced by Joe Lo Truglio after scheduling difficulties.
Malin Åkerman and Lauren Ambrose were announced as cast members on September 15. Ambrose plays a member of the freewheeling commune that the two stars come into contact with en route to Atlanta. On October 5, Alan Alda was announced to play "the head of a naturist village". Michaela Watkins was announced to play Rudd's sister-in-law on October 18.
David Wain announced the addition of Jordan Peele to the cast on his blog on September 12 and Ken Marino and Kerri Kenney-Silver on September 19. Paul Rudd will reunite with Jennifer Aniston for the first time in seven years, since they both co-starred together in 18 episodes of the sitcom Friends. The two also co-starred in the 1998 comedy "The Object of My Affection".
David Wain began chronicling the film's production and pre-production on his blog on May 21, 2010. Most of the production took place in Georgia.
Filming took place in a number of places in Georgia: the Gwinnett Diner in Lawrenceville (which was also used for a scene in the film Road Trip); a subdivision called Miramonte Way off Ozora Road in the Campton/Monroe area; and in Habersham County, off of New Liberty Road.
The film was released on February 24, 2012 in the United States and will be released on March 2nd in the UK.
The film opened with generally mixed to postitive reviews. Based upon 80 reviews, it received a 60% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Among 32 top critics, it obtained an approval rating of 53% with the consensus saying, "It isn't always as funny as it should be, but Wanderlust benefits from an extremely talented cast and some of David Wain's most confident, assured work behind the camera."
The film opened with an underwhelming $6,526,650 weekend gross.
