Emilio TiniEmilio Tini: I was born in Umbria, the “green heart” of Italy. I travel frequently but there is my home, my landscape, my sky, my soul.

Question??: Emilio what led you to a career in fashion photography? Do you have any formal training in your background?

Emilio Tini: It has happened by chance. I discovered photography in my twenties. With a passion for the 60's Italian and French movies I wanted to be a director. After attending the university for a few years I became an assistant on movie sets and with fashion photographers. In 2002 I started  my own career.

Question??: Who are the photographers that have inspired you and your approach to fashion photography?

Emilio Tini: Richard Avedon, H. C. Bresson, Robert Frank (Bresson and Frank are not fashion photographers but  their “magic realism” influenced my vision).

Question??: In your opinion how important are personal projects to the development of a photographer’s growth?

Emilio Tini: Personal projects are the most important thing in photography to me because they allow you to have a personal and strong identity in the middle of the mass of photographers.

Question??: Do you maintain a studio or do you rent one when needed?

Emilio Tini: The clients rent the studio or location when they are needed.

Question??: What would we find in your camera bag for a typical assignment shoot in studio or on location?

Emilio Tini: It depends on the job (editorials, advertising, portraits …) but generally a Hasselblad H2, 35mm, 80mm, 50-110mm, 120 mm, 150 mm, 210mm. I always bring with me my sketches, the drawings I make for the photographic projects.

Question??: What is your approach to lighting? Do you prefer artificial or available light? Is there a set up you tend to start with? What are your most used light modifiers and could you give us a visual example?

Emilio Tini: It depends on what the project needs. I use different kind of lights but I always prefer a simple set lighting (artificial or natural) that exalts the subject and the geometry of the composition.

Question??: Do you spend a lot of time processing images? Could you please describe your digital work flow and the software you use?

Emilio Tini: With the Hasselblad I usually shoot into Capture One and then do the post production with Photoshop.

Question??: Do you make use of custom white balances when you shoot?

Emilio Tini: Yes.

Question??: Image printing, how do you handle that?

Emilio Tini: I have a  personal team that handles my post production. They are a professional crew and we work together for commercial prints or fine art prints. When I have time I like to shoot film and develop prints myself.

Question??: As you look through the viewfinder what is the most critical moment in the capture of an image?

Emilio Tini: I love all the aspects of this job. For me it is something as natural as breathing but you can have critical moments when there is too much pressure from clients on the sets.

Question??: With today’s economy what changes are driving the fashion market place and how have you adjusted?

Emilio Tini: With this global crisis is the beginning of a new era. You must learn to be more flexible without losing your true photographic identity.

Question??: What seems to be the biggest obstacle to over-come in building a client base?

Emilio Tini: True respect for your photographic vision.

Question??: If not fashion photography what would Emilio Tini be doing with his time?

Emilio Tini: Making movies.

Question??: What has been the best advice given to you by another photographer?

Emilio Tini: I never met him but I love the H. C. Bresson quote, “To take photographs is putting one’s head, one’s eye, and one’s heart on the same axis.”

Question??: What advice would you like to share with photographers starting out?

Emilio Tini: Always be yourself. Try to understand your photographic sensibility without betraying yourself for success.

Question??: Thank you Emilio for sharing your thoughts and images with us. It has been a real pleasure. We wish you continued success.
